Education at Plymouth Church

Plymouth Church's Christian Education program affords every person opportunities to explore their spirituality while learning about themselves and their world.

Our Church School serves the educational needs of our children. The Nursery, for infants to children four years of age, is available year-round during the Sunday Worship service. The Sunday School operates from September through May, and provides structured, age-grouped Christian Education classes for children from kindergarten through eighth grade, also during the Sunday Worship service. Confirmation class is available to youths in ninth and tenth grades.

Plymouth is committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment for our children; in September of 2005, we adopted a Safe Sanctuary policy. For more information about this child abuse prevention strategy, please read the explanatory statement   "click here"

Plymouth conducts special All-Class Sunday School programs throughout the year, featuring themes such as:

  • November - Thanksgiving theme
  • January - Epiphany theme
  • February - Mission theme
  • March or April - Easter events (a special sunrise service, breakfast, and Easter Egg Hunt)
  • April - Earth Day theme
The Summer Sunday School program typically operates every Sunday in July, offering a less-structured, "one-room schoolhouse" experience for Plymouth youth.

Youth education isn't limited to classes. In October, Plymouth puts on an afternoon Halloween party to benefit UNICEF. Plymouth youth perform in two full length Worship service programs each year, one at Christmas, and the other to mark the end of the Church School year. Middle school through college-aged youth and young adults have the chance to participate in mission trips, joining with youth from across the country in work camp settings to rehabilitate housing for economically disadvantaged people. Fundraising to support the mission trips is a community-wide activity at Plymouth.

As part of Plymouth's Health Ministry we offer Churchercisers weekly exercise classes as well as occasional Health Education programs.

Other Adult Education programs offered at Plymouth range from the formal, such as the Disciple Bible Study, to more informal discussion groups and other spiritual explorations.

Finally, Plymouth offers an Outdoor Ministry program for people of all ages, which provides opportunities for individuals and families to participate in UCC church camps throughout the year.

The Pentecost Quilt

In the spring of 2007, all of the children of the Plymouth Church Sunday School created a quilt, with the guidance and assistance of Rheda Schultz. The children heard and discussed the story of Pentecost. Each child designed a figure for the quilt based on his or her response to the story. Some created carnival rides (it was a festival day!), people, tongues of fire and mighty winds. Others created trees, houses, flowers and sun to complete the picture. In addition to Rheda Schultz, the creators of the Pentecost Quilt are:

Brandon Hall, Katarina Klafka, Rea Solomon, Matthew Snell, Maxwell Alvarado, Josef Klafka, Anna Mickle, Isaiah Stefan, Gillian Wallskog Gehri, Michael Hall, William Stefan, Leah Patterson, Michael Balke, Aiden Welch, Gwyneth Alvarado, Emily Holmes, Eden Patterson, and Elijah Rickenbach.
