Plymouth's Role in the Community

The people of Plymouth Church believe that God's work is not and cannot be bounded by the walls of our church building. God's work -- our work -- must extend to the commmunity we live in as well.

Plymouth Church contributes to the community in several ways. First, Plymouth provides ongoing and substantial financial support for Our Church's Wider Mission. OCWM supports the work of the United Church of Christ in Wisconsin, and at National and International levels, including a multitude of Justice Ministries, Social Outreach ministries, medical, social, educational, religous, and agricultural missions in places all over the world. We gave $12,985.00 to OCWM in 2006.

In addition, the Board of Social Concerns is central to the social action program of Plymouth church, administering funds (from the Endowment Fund and other gifts to the church) for local and global needs, soliciting non-cash donations for food pantries, homeless shelters, etc., and offering information about current needs in our community and the world.

Regular recipients of direct aid are such local groups as the Interfaith Hospitality Network, which houses and feeds homeless families in host churches; and our neighboring Atwood Community Center.

Pastor Wolfe administers direct assistance from a Special Aid Fund, especially for individuals and families in danger of losing their housing. Further special needs funding goes to Lowell Elementary and O’Keefe Middle Schools.

Global outreach is via Church World Service (CWS). The Board also promotes the CWS/CROP Bike Hike for Hunger.

Although the Board of Social Concerns directs and monitors the social action program, it is the time, money and efforts of many, if not most, Plymouth members which make this an effective and consistent effort.

Plymouth members donate bedding and clothing to two Indian Reservations in South Dakota, hike and ride bikes for CROP, donate non-perishable food items for the Atwood Community Center Food Pantry, and participate in the Madison Urban Ministry's political efforts to improve the lot of homeless Madisonians and work for more easily affordable housing in our city.

Finally, Plymouth Church offers its building and facilities for use by numerous community groups on both a regular and ad hoc basis.

From the plenty of their own lives, Plymouth members always seek to share the gifts they receive.
